Mendeley was founded by three German PhD candidates. Therefore, I would like to compare the key features as well as major drawbacks related to Mendeley and EndNote. Mendeley and EndNote are two most commonly used reference management tools. Although all reference management tools typically perform the similar multiple functions, you may need to find which one is better suited to your requirements than another. Nowadays, a wide range of reference management software programs are available such as Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, BibDesk, RefWorks, and many more. These tools can automatically format citations for different literature sources, including books, dissertations, conference papers, journals, magazines, and websites. Mostly, these reference management software also come with document creation tools, file storage and sharing options, and limited literature search functionality. Reference management tools can also be used in areas other than academia, such as business reports and presentations. These programs also help the researchers, readers, reviewers, and editors quickly locate the literature cited by authors. Accurate referencing is a critical part of scientific communication. This has been a known Mendeley issue since 2009.Reference management software are designed to help researchers and academic authors in citing references precisely and efficiently. This means that capitalization is always based on what you enter in Mendeley. Mendeley adds an extra set of curly braces to titles. There are a number of small bugs in how the bibtex files are formatted, and these create problems when building your bibliography in a LaTeX document. However, there was one major issue, and that was how Mendeley creates bibtex files. Overall, I think my workflow of citation management improved. I eventually settled on Mendeley for the following reasons: I tried out Zotero for a while but found it lacking (perhaps more on that in a future post). This year, I started looking for an alternative. This wasn’t a huge problem, but it was inconvenient to need to proxy through a campus server just to access my references. The website was behind a subscription wall associated with my institution. The website wasn’t responsive, and it was actually kind of clunky to look up papers and export Bibtex files.Eventually, some minor annoyances piled up: I was using RefWorks for citation management during grad school. Ability to select what types of entries include the URL (instead of only webpages)įirst, here’s some background on how I came to using Mendeley.Constraints on what you can write in the “year” field. Some of these problems haven’t been officially fixed for over 6 years!
